Field Practice is the Nottingham-based architectural practice of James Woodcock.

I specialise in the creative, sensitive reimagining of existing homes and other buildings, working in the Midlands and Yorkshire. Through simple, practical, ecological design I help to transform daily life for clients in a range of contexts, from historic listed buildings to 1970s estates. I established Field Practice in 2020 after working at leading offices including Architype, Webb Yates, Arup and Practice Architecture.

I am the first recipient of the Architecture Foundation's Matthew Bonye Research Fellowship, undertaking a project interviewing builders and craftspeople around the UK about their work, due to be published as a book in 2028. I have a longstanding interest in how buildings are used and made, and the people that do both.

Alongside practice I am an experienced educator, and led a studio on the Masters Architecture course at the University of Sheffield, with students nominated for national awards including the RIBA President's Medals and the AJ Student Awards. I have been an invited tutor and critic at several architecture schools in the UK. 

I completed my studies at the University of Sheffield, London Metropolitan University and The Bartlett, University College London.
